Adding value for your employer

The Lawn-Cutting Crew is a humor fiction blog. It's sort of like a comic strip, but without the drawings. It offers self-contained chapters and lots of laughs.

It was a gorgeous Saturday afternoon. I was hanging out at my girlfriend’s house, sitting on the back porch and surfing the Internet on her iPad.

Joanne, my girlfriend, stepped outside with two cans of lime Perrier. She handed me one and sat down on the porch swing next to me.

“What are you up to?” she asked, stretching her legs as we rocked back and forth.

“I was looking at my company’s website,” I said, tilting the iPad screen toward her.

Joanne rolled her eyes. “Why are you thinking about work on a Saturday?”

“Well, I heard that the owner, Benito, paid big bucks for this site. Yet when you navigate it, it’s pretty static, and the content is full of typos.”

Joanne took the iPad and swiped through the site. “Yeah, this is awful. You could do something much better with WordPress.”

“That’s what I was thinking,” I said, taking back the iPad.

“What do you mean?” Joanne asked. “You want to ask your boss if he’ll pay you to redo the site?”

“Maybe,” I said. “I went to college for journalism and public relations, but since graduation, I’ve never used any of my skills. Instead of mowing lawns, maybe I could spend a couple of weeks rebuilding the site. I could take photos of the projects we’ve completed, and I could even start a company blog and write weekly content for it. If that goes well, then maybe I could expand our social-media presence to include Facebook and Twitter.”

Joanne smiled, sipping her drink. “Look at you with all these ideas.”

I shrugged. “If nothing else, it would get me working indoors for a while, instead of outside under the blistering sun.”

“Have you talked to Benito about any of this?”

“No,” I said. “And the idea makes me nervous. He doesn’t seem to like me much. He’s always screaming at me in Italian.”

“Does he even know about your public-relations skills?” Joanne asked. “Did you discuss your college background at all when you originally interviewed?”

“Not really,” I said. “As I recall, the interview wasn’t that long. When he found out I had both a pulse and a driver’s license, he offered me the job.”

I’m a humorist and fiction writer, as well as the author of two books. One is a collection of humor, and one is a collection of short stories. Both books are available on Amazon. I always wanted to write a comic strip, but I can’t draw. Not even a stick-person. So that’s why “The Lawn-Cutting Crew” is a comic strip without drawings. I hope you enjoy!
