A college degree just doesn’t cut it

The Lawn-Cutting Crew is a humor fiction blog. It's sort of like a comic strip, but without the drawings. It offers self-contained chapters and lots of laughs.

It was early Wednesday morning, and we were pulling in front of our first account for the day — a three-story luxury home in a ritzy golf-course community.

“OK, boys,” said Crew Leader Carl, as we stepped out of the truck. “Listen carefully. I want you to do an extra-special job on this house today. You hear? The company owner, Benito, hired an outside marketing firm to overhaul his website, and they’re going to come by after we’re gone and take photos and video of the house to use for promotional purposes. So the lawn, the flowers, the trees — all of it needs to look like a magazine cover.”

I stood there with my arms crossed, glaring. “You’ve got to be kidding me!”

Carl narrowed his eyes. “What?”

“Benito’s actually hiring a marketing company to redo his website?” I asked.

Carl nodded. “Yep. He told me himself last night. I guess they’re first-class. They take amazing photos, and their videos and ad copy can’t be beat.”

I shook my head, kicking a small rock off the sidewalk. “What a crock.”

“What’s your problem?” Carl asked.

“I have a college degree in Journalism!” I said. “And my focus was advertising and public relations. Doesn’t Benito know that? I can write ad copy, shoot photos, edit video, design websites — all of that! And I’ve told him that several times! Instead of hiring some expensive third party, why doesn’t he ever give me a chance to use my skills?”

Carl shrugged. “I guess because you have no experience.”

“So he can pay me less than what he’s paying the marketing company!” I said. “He’d save money, and I’d probably produce higher-quality work! We’d both win! He’d get top-notch content, and I’d have an opportunity to develop my hard-earned skills.”

“But Benito can’t afford to take a chance on somebody with no experience,” Carl said. “His business is on the line. He needs proven professionals who can develop quality content with no questions asked. Why should he gamble on someone like you when this third-party company has a proven track record? Sure, they might be more expensive, but at least they’ve been around the block.”

“But I know I could do it,” I said. “I studied for four years and paid a lot of good money to go to college. Doesn’t a degree count for anything anymore?”

Carl shrugged. “Only if you’ve got the experience to go with it.”

I’m a humorist and fiction writer, as well as the author of two books. One is a collection of humor, and one is a collection of short stories. Both books are available on Amazon. I always wanted to write a comic strip, but I can’t draw. Not even a stick-person. So that’s why “The Lawn-Cutting Crew” is a comic strip without drawings. I hope you enjoy!
