All the bare necessities

The Lawn-Cutting Crew is a humor fiction blog. It's sort of like a comic strip, but without the drawings. It offers self-contained chapters and lots of laughs.

We were in the maintenance truck, barreling down the highway. Crew Leader Carl was driving, a cigarette dangling from his lips. Our tools clanked in the trailer every time we hit even the tiniest pothole.

I was in the backseat, sandwiched between Juan and Stan. All of the windows were down, which let a nice breeze gush through.

As we drove, Carl’s cell started ringing. He unholstered it and held it to his ear, steering with his left knee. “Hello? Oh, hi, honey. Oh, you are? Well, I can go to the supermarket tonight, if you want to wait. OK. No, that’s fine.”

He shifted in his seat, moving the cell from his right hand to his left. The truck swerved, so he switched knees and started steering with his right.

The cigarette never left his lips.

“Uh-huh,” he said, cradling the phone against his shoulder. “Well, I’m not sure what we need. Do we have coffee? Uh-huh. Do we have beer? Uh-huh. Do we have cigarettes? Uh-huh. Well, it sounds like we’re good. I can’t think of anything else we need.”

He switched knees again, steering with his left. “OK, dear,” he said. “Sounds good. I’ll talk to you soon. Love you.”

He clicked off the phone and slid it back in its holster. I felt relieved when he put his right hand back on the wheel.

“Girlfriend’s going to the supermarket,” he said, talking to nobody in particular. “She asked me if there’s anything specific we need, but I couldn’t think of anything. At least not on the spot.”

He scratched his stubbled chin. “It seems like I’m forgetting something, though. I’m sure I am. There’s something I wanted to tell her to buy that I didn’t.”

“How about food?” I suggested.

Carl snapped his fingers. “That’s it! Thanks!”

He whipped out his phone and dialed his girlfriend’s number.

Author: Allen

I’m a humorist and fiction writer, as well as the author of two books. One is a collection of humor, and one is a collection of short stories. Both books are available on Amazon. I always wanted to write a comic strip, but I can’t draw. Not even a stick-person. So that’s why “The Lawn-Cutting Crew” is a comic strip without drawings. I hope you enjoy!
