Becoming a better person

The Lawn-Cutting Crew is a humor fiction blog. It's sort of like a comic strip, but without the drawings. It offers self-contained chapters and lots of laughs.

It was early morning, and we were all at the shop, loading our tools into the truck.

We climbed into the cab to take off. As usual, Crew Leader Carl slid behind the wheel.

“Now don’t laugh at me, guys,” he said, opening his lunchbox and removing a CD, “but my girlfriend wants me to work on my anger issues. She bought me a motivational CD that you’re supposed to listen to as you drive.”

“No way!” I said, slapping my hands against my cheeks to fein shock. “You have anger issues, Carl? Say it isn’t so!”

“Shut up, you sarcastic bastard!” Carl said, spinning in his seat, his fist clenched. He paused, then took a deep breath. “Sorry. What I mean is, that’s not funny, Peter.”

I shrugged. “Actually, I find myself rather amusing.”

Carl started the truck, then slid the CD into the player. As we pulled out of the shop, tranquil synthesizer music started playing, and a soothing female voice said, “You are a calm, peaceful person. Nothing rattles you. You’re slow to get upset. You appreciate harmony and tranquility.”

The guys and I looked at each other, trying not to laugh. Stan, who was sitting next to me, was biting his lip. A snicker escaped, and he covered his mouth.

Carl glared at us through the rearview mirror. “What the hell was that? Are you guys making fun of me?”

“No, sir,” Stan said, his lips quivering as he suppressed laughter. He pinched his left arm hard enough to leave a bright-red indentation.

“I would appreciate a little patience and support,” Carl said. “I’m trying to better myself, here. Is it so surprising that I’m taking steps to become a better person?”

“Not really,” I said. “What’s truly surprising is that this rickety old truck has a working CD player. I guess miracles never cease.”

Author: Allen

I’m a humorist and fiction writer, as well as the author of two books. One is a collection of humor, and one is a collection of short stories. Both books are available on Amazon. I always wanted to write a comic strip, but I can’t draw. Not even a stick-person. So that’s why “The Lawn-Cutting Crew” is a comic strip without drawings. I hope you enjoy!
