We were all in the maintenance truck, barreling down the highway to our next job. As usual, Crew Leader Carl was driving.
“Oh, wow!” he exclaimed, as we flew past a building. “I haven’t seen one of those for a long time.”
“What?” I asked.
“That fencing company had a Help Wanted sign on their gate,” Carl said. “It’s been years since I’ve seen one of those.”
I frowned. “What kind of a sign?”
“A Help Wanted sign,” Carl said.
He looked at me in the rearview mirror. I shrugged.
“You have no idea what I’m talking about?” he asked, his eyebrows raised.
“What’s a Help Wanted sign?” I asked.
“They’re … oh, I see.” Carl nodded. “You entered the workforce after the 2008 financial crisis, didn’t you?”
I nodded. “Yeah.”
“No wonder,” he said. “OK, then. You’re not going to have any idea what I’m talking about.”
