Getting lost in your work

Daydreaming about an attractive client isn’t always advisable when you’re wielding sharp tools.

It was early afternoon on a Tuesday, and the crew and I were driving toward my favorite account: a ranch house in the sticks owned by a doctor.

Actually, I think everyone on the crew loved the account. And it wasn’t because of the home, or because a doctor owned it.

It was because the doctor’s attractive, twenty-something housewife was always lounging in her bathing suit by the backyard pool whenever we were there.

I was pretty sure she did it on purpose … even though she never spoke to any of us except to say “good afternoon.”

Crew Leader Carl pulled up to the house. Before the truck had even stopped, all of the guys had jumped out and were grabbing their tools.

“I notice you guys are never this eager at any of our other jobs,” Carl said, muttering.

I ran into the backyard with my trashcan and pruners. Sure enough, the doctor’s wife was sunning herself by the pool. She wore large sunglasses and a small bikini.

I started pruning the flowers closest to the pool.

“Good afternoon!” I called, waving.

“Good afternoon,” she said. “It’s good to see you.”

“It’s good to see you too,” I said, continuing to prune. I gazed at her and smiled.

Because I was focused on her and not on my work, I nicked my finger with the pruners. I gasped, startled, holding my hand. A dot of blood appeared on my fingertip.

“Did you cut yourself?” the doctor’s wife called.

“Just a little bit,” I said.

“Well, come on up here, and I’ll take care of it for you,” she said.

I dropped my pruners and scampered onto the pool deck, nearly tripping.

The woman smiled and patted the lounger next to her. “Sit down here.”

I sat.

The woman took my hand. “Oh, poor baby. That looks like it hurts so much.”

“Well,” I said, “it does sting a little.”

The wife drew my finger to her lips and kissed it. Then, staring me in the eye, she drew my entire finger into her mouth and started sucking on it.

“Oh,” I said, moaning.

“Now how does it feel?” she asked, my finger still buried deep in her mouth.

“Much better,” I said, closing my eyes. “Thank you.”

“Yes?” I said, my eyes closed.

“Huh?” I opened my eyes. I was standing in front of the flowers, holding my pruners. I was startled to discover that I was sucking on my own finger.

I looked around, and saw that the doctor’s wife was nowhere to be seen. The pool was bare.

Instead, Crew Leader Carl was standing beside me with his arms crossed, frowning.

“What in the hell are you doing?” he asked, glaring.

I looked from Carl to the deserted pool lounger, then back to Carl. Slowly, I pulled my finger from my mouth.

“Sorry,” I said. “I guess I sometimes get lost in my work.”

Carl’s eyes narrowed. “Yeah, try not to do that. If you daydream too much, you’re liable to hurt yourself.”
